Introduction

Extra-curricular activities in St. Patrick’s Classical School are those that fall outside the realm of the normal school curriculum and are available to all students. Such activities are voluntary and are predominantly related to sport or school social events.

Studies have shown that students can benefit greatly from participation in extra-curricular activities. It also leads to more success and greater achievements in school work as well as an increase in higher educational attainments. Students who participate in extra-curricular activities also tend to be more successful in developing friendships and relationships in general.

Sport is hugely important in St. Patrick’s Classical School with football, hurling, basketball, athletics, rugby and golf all played or participated in to competitive levels.

Football

Football is the dominant sport in St. Patrick’s Classical School. Over the last 25 years we have become one of the country’s foremost football nurseries with numerous pupils/past-pupils going on to represent Meath at all levels from Minor to Senior.

In 1991 St. Patrick’s Classical School reached the All-Ireland Colleges Final (the Hogan Cup Final) for the first time. We lost that game but the seed had been sown and over the next 13 years the school went on to win 3 All-Ireland titles, 2000, 2001 and 2004.

Golf has been promoted in St. Patrick’s Classical School over the years originally by Mr Tony Stanley and more recently by Mr Aidan Jordan.  The school reached the All-Ireland Final of the Schools Senior Matchplay competition and won the Junior Leinster titles in the past. Every year there is a school outing to Royal Tara Golf Club in May for the school competition where there are prizes for each year group as well as a stroke competition for the “Golfer of the Year” trophy and title.

Basketball

St. Patrick’s Classical School basketball teams have enjoyed many successes over the last number of years.  The school currently has four teams playing at ‘A’ Level.  Club players and students who have never played before are encouraged to take part in the sport and recent success at both regional and national level have encouraged and promoted the development of the sport throughout all year groups.  Training takes place both at lunchtime and after school with junior and senior competitions running from October to April.  Our current school teams have had many successes at regional competitions and were All-Ireland Champions in 2019.  The school was also awarded the title of ‘Boys Secondary School of the Year 2019’ at Basketball Ireland’s Annual Awards Ceremony.

Rugby

Brief History

Our school affiliated to Leinster Rugby IRFU in 1982 and has been playing competitively in both Senior and Junior since.

The original team colours were navy and blue which were similar to the local club, Navan RFC.  In 1995 a change was made to what is now our school colours of black and gold.

Rugby has remained strong in our school throughout the years at all age levels with success at Junior in the Duff and Fr.
