World Book Day 2025
March 7, 2025
Happy World Book Day! Reading is an essential part of everyday life in school but reading for enjoyment is just as important. There are many great benefits to reading such as reducing stress, expanding vocabulary and increasing your imagination and creativity. A number of events took place to mark World Book Day. The whole school participated in a Drop Everything and Read initiative during the first class this morning. This was an opportunity for both students and staff to read for enjoyment. We hope this was a pleasant way to begin the day! Students from class 3K participated in a project where they analysed the front covers of a number of recommended novels for Junior Cycle. This is a very useful pre-reading activity and demonstrates the power of a front cover.Their work is displayed on our school Read Wall. All 3rd Year English classes entered a competition where they had to write a personal response to the question Why are books still important in the Digital Age? . We received a variety of very insightful responses. The overall winner was Niall Rogan from class 3i . Well done Niall. Cillian Fox from 6th Year and a member of the Book Club delivered a very powerful reading of an extract from the novel The Outsiders by S.E Hinton. This novel is familiar to many students and the extract Cillian read is a key moment from the novel. Tutor groups also participated in a World Book Day quiz during Tutor Time. Thank you to all tutors for your participation. We have attached a recommended reading list for both Junior and Senior Cycle students. From the dark streets of The Outsiders to the glamour of the Roaring Twenties New York in The Great Gatsby, there is a book on the list for everyone! Kind regards, The English Department.
